What You Should Know About Tooth Extractions

Your teeth serve several aesthetic and functional purposes. However, if one or more of your teeth is unhealthy or doesn’t fit with the rest of your teeth, having that tooth extracted may be necessary.

Tooth extraction involves pulling a tooth from your gum and jaw. The surgical process may sound painful, but our dentists use a combination of medication, best practices, and the latest technology to ensure that every tooth removal is quick and painless as possible.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

At Natural Dentures & Implant Center, we only recommend a tooth extraction if the affected tooth is beyond restoration. Scenarios that may require pulling a tooth include:

  • Hyperdontia: Hyperdontia means having too many teeth. An overcrowded dentition leads to underbite or overbite, discomfort, chewing problems, and other issues. Remedying the problem will require taking out the excess teeth to make room in your mouth.
  • Wisdom Teeth Removal: Most mouths only have room for 28 teeth. If all four of your wisdom teeth come in, it may lead to overcrowding and require removing one molar or more.
  • Braces: Before installing braces, extracting one or more teeth may be necessary to make room for the braces to work properly.
  • Trauma: If a broken molar or incisor is beyond repair, your dentist will have to extract it and replace it with a dental implant.
  • Emergency Tooth Extraction: Dental emergencies such as a tooth infection may require tooth extraction to prevent pain and the infection from spreading.
  • Sickness: Cancer patients and individuals with compromised immune systems may need to remove decayed teeth to stop a dental disease from spreading.

If your dentist recommends tooth extraction, delaying treatment exposes you to unnecessary pain and discomfort that will only worsen with time. Moreover, it could lead to sepsis, which can be deadly. Stay safe, healthy, and happy by letting our experts take care of your tooth extractions.

What Happens During and After a Tooth Extraction?

Our tooth extractions are usually painless. We accomplish this by applying safe, local anesthesia to the tooth and its surrounding gums and bone tissue. After numbing the area, we will use an specialized tools to widen the space between the affected tooth and the surrounding gums.

We will then use specialized forceps to remove the damaged tooth from its socket. After the extraction, we will thoroughly clean and treat the area to prevent infections and ensure a quick recovery. Simple extractions are typically over within a few minutes.

If you experience bleeding after an extraction, it’s normal. The bleeding will eventually clot, and you will need to be careful not to disturb the clotting, or the bleeding will restart.

We will provide you with everything you need, including guidelines that you must follow to speed up your recovery and minimize swelling. If at any point you have concerns about your recovery, don’t hesitate to call us to schedule a checkup.

Is an Extracted Tooth Replaceable?

During your consultation for a dental extraction, we can provide you with options to replace the removed tooth. Note that replacing a tooth isn’t always advisable, as when a wisdom tooth removal has been performed to fix overcrowding or an impacted tooth.

A tooth replacement is also inadvisable if you grind or clench your teeth or take immunosuppressants. Depending on the removed tooth and other factors, we can replace it with a:

  • Dental Implant: Implants are artificial teeth. We install them to replace teeth extracted from the upper or lower jaw. As long as you are generally healthy and your jaw is fine, you can be a prime candidate for dental implants.
  • Bridge: A bridge is a false tooth held in place by joining it to adjacent teeth. It is suitable for replacing one or more missing teeth. We typically recommend installing a bridge if the missing tooth came out a long time ago and the gum and bone have receded and are incapable of holding an implant.
  • Removable Partial Denture: Partial dentures are the best option for people who have lost several teeth. The denture consists of replacement teeth that match the rest of your dentition, and you can take it out at your convenience. Getting one will support your facial muscles and facilitate chewing.

FAQs

The cost of tooth extraction depends on the complexity of the procedure. For example, removing one tooth will generally cost less than removing a few teeth. Also, extracting a severely impacted tooth may cost more than removing a regular tooth.  Sometimes, it will cost less if we are removing many teeth at one time and we are using sedation to make you more comfortable (ask us for details as to how to qualify for these savings)

We promise to provide you with an honest quote after your consultation. We can also tailor your treatment to fit your budget.

You may experience some pain and swelling for a few days after tooth removal. You can minimize the swelling and pain by using the medication we provide and applying a cold compress to your face.

After your tooth extraction, you can go home, but make sure to follow your at-home care instructions. Otherwise, you may experience a delayed recovery and other complications. These instructions include avoiding smoking, sucking, spitting, slurping, or rinsing your mouth with too much force for the first 24 hours after your surgery.
